hidden people

Entrenched in Iceland's ancient history, respected by its inhabitants today, and living in the rocks and hills across the land, are the Huldufolk, or the Hidden People. According to folklore, these elusive people are only seen when they want to be seen by other inhabitants. There is an intrinsic and enduring connection between these Hudufolk and the natural environment; an environment dominated by earthquakes, avalanches, and rocks twisted by volcanic action into alarming and ferocious shapes. These forces of unpredictability, and cruelty, have through the ages, shaped Icelandic existence and driven fervent imagination. Today, Icelandic folklore and contemporary living everywhere persists in procreating a stratum of "hidden people"; people who are continually adversely affected by environmental forces beyond their control.
